Zinc is one of the older metals, although for many years it was mainly used as an alloying metal with copper to form brass. Use of galvanised steel is widespread; it is used to protect steel used in vehicles and for metal exposed to the elements such as crash barriers, fences, lamp posts and the metal infrastructure for railway electrification systems.

Zinc is the fourth most common metal in use behind steel, aluminium and copper. The auto, construction and infrastructure building industries are the large users of zinc and the metal is produced across a large number of countries, with 19 countries mining more than 50,000 tonnes per year.
