Launch of nickel low-carbon briquette premium, cif global, $/tonne

Fastmarkets launches MB-NI-0256 nickel low-carbon briquette premium, cif global, $/tonne, on Wednesday May 1.

After a month-long consultation period, Fastmarkets has launched a low-carbon nickel briquette premium to bring additional price transparency on the value of low-carbon nickel to the physical market.

Demand for such pricing mechanisms has steadily increased in recent months, particularly in the Class 1 nickel market following significant shifts in the location and methods of production of nickel products.

This new low-carbon nickel briquette price assessment contributes to a growing suite of low-carbon prices published by Fastmarkets, which include prices for aluminium and steel.

Fastmarkets appreciates that this is still an emerging market and acknowledges the feedback received during the consultation process. As such, Fastmarkets will continue to consult on the inclusion of additional metrics for measuring sustainability in the price assessment, as well as the expansion to include other shapes of nickel.

The confirmed initial specifications for the price are as follows:

MB-NI-0256 Nickel low-carbon briquette premium, cif global, $/tonne
Quality: Briquette. 99.80% min primary nickel: ASTM B39-79 (2013) or GB/T 6516- 2010 – Ni9990 grade
Carbon Limit: 18tCO2e per tonne of nickel briquette produced, Scope 1 and 2 emissions, measured following ISO14040 standards.
Quantity: Min 20 tonnes
Location: cif global premium, premium on top of exchange or trade platform listed nickel price
Timing: Up to 12 months
Unit: USD/tonne
Publication: Monthly, first working day of the month, 4pm London time
Notes: Price will follow the UK pricing calendar and will be assessed from London. Sanctioned material will not be considered for the price assessment.

This price will be part of the Fastmarkets base metals package.
