Ghana Bauxite Company Limited (GBC) is Ghana’s leading bauxite producer and operator of the Awaso bauxite mine in the Western North Region. Established in the 1940s, GBC plays an important role in Ghana’s mining sector and export earnings, with a focus on operational excellence, sustainability, and innovation across its mining and logistics chain. Ownership GBC is jointly owned by Ofori-Poku Company Limited (80%) and the Government of Ghana (20%). The Government’s interest in the project is managed by the Ghana Integrated Aluminium Development Corporation (GIADEC). Operations GBC maintains a strong track record in safe and responsible mining. The company produces high-grade, gibbsite-rich (trihydrate) bauxite with an average alumina content of 52% and low silica of 1.5%, ensuring premium performance for downstream refineries. Currently, GBC exports over 2 million tonnes of bauxite annually through the Takoradi Port. To drive growth and minimise environmental impact, GBC has deployed state-of-the-art surface miners, enabling selective ore extraction with reduced reliance on drilling and blasting. Backed by these investments and infrastructure upgrades, GBC is targeting an increase in annual production capacity to 6 million tonnes by 2026. For more than a decade, SMB has actively supported the growth of the local mining industry, generating employment and unlocking new economic opportunities.
In 2025, SMB produced and exported more than 71 million tons of bauxite—around 40% of Guinea’s total national production and exports—thereby reinforcing Guinea’s status as one of the world’s leading bauxite producers.
