Patrick Cavanagh leads the analysis for paper grade and specialty pulp at Fastmarkets RISI. He is the author of several recurring and multi-client reports, including the World Pulp Monthly, the World Dissolving Pulp Monitor, the Outlook for World Fluff Pulp and the Nonwovens Price & Cost Monitor. Pat holds a Master of Science in Environmental and Natural Resource Economics from the University of Rhode Island and a Bachelor of Arts from the American University, Washington, D.C.

Melissa Chen joined UMPaper at RISI Beijing Office as senior packaging paper analyst in 2011. She covers pricing and end-uses for packaging paper and board in China, with a focus on containerboard and cartonboard grades. Prior to UMPaper, Melissa worked for Guangdong Lee & Man Paper and Dongguan Jintian Paper. She holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Pulp and Paper from Shaanxi University of Science and Technology in China.

Eric Hu joined Euromoney Fastmarkets in 2020, responsible for Asia macro research and packaging paper industry research. He is good at using economic and econometric models to analyze supply/demand balances, trade dynamics, cost/price development and forecast mid-term (5 years), long-term (20 years) Asia packaging paper market movement. He was interviewed by CBN to analyze China’s macro economy and present investment ideas on different asset classes. Prior to this, he served at Haitong International as China Economist, he had more than five years of experience analyzing China economy. Eric graduated from Johns Hopkins University and has a master degree.

Levi Li joined RISI Shanghai Representation office in January, 2008, as the Asian Key Account Manager - Pulp and Paper, managing all commercial activities of RISI’s pulp and paper service within the Asian territory. In March, 2012, Levi Li was appointed General Manager of RISI China, overseeing all RISI services in China, ranging from data and information business, event business, as well as consulting business. Prior to RISI, Levi Li was CEO of UMPaper (Shanghai Leadway E-commerce Co., Ltd.) – the leading local pulp and paper market information provider, from January, 2007 to June, 2007. Levi Li started his career in China pulp and paper industry starting from January 2004, with his first job at Sinar Mas Group (APP China), and had been taking different roles as business analyst, sales executive, and market intelligence manager. Levi Li holds a master degree in business administration from Fudan University, Shanghai, and now lived in Shanghai with the family.

Beth began her career at Fastmarkets RISI in 1995, as an economist analyzing Asian paper and board markets. Her work was instrumental in helping to develop and expand Fastmarket RISI’s analysis of these markets, building Fastmarket RISI’s extensive databases, developing Fastmarket RISI’s price series, and forecasting for the Asian region. In 2006 she helped to open fastmarket RISI’s Shanghai office. She currently is responsible for the Asian Paper Packaging and Asian Graphic paper forecasts and reports. She also oversees the balancing of Fastmarket RISI’s regional packaging forecasts into our global outlook. Beth holds a Masters in Public Affairs (focusing on Economics and Public Policy) from the School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University, USA and a B.A. in Economics and Computer Science from Dartmouth College, USA.

John North joined RISI in July of 2017 as an economist covering the international timber markets. Prior to RISI, he spent 6 years on active duty as an officer in the US Marine Corps, serving primarily in the Middle East and West Africa. Afterwards, he held a civilian role with the United Nations in Cote d’Ivoire before returning to graduate school in the US. John holds a Bachelor of Arts in Modern Languages from The Citadel and a Master of Science in Agricultural Economics from the University of Georgia.

After working nearly 18 years for a large forest industry consulting company in Helsinki and Munich, Esko established EU Consulting, his own forest industry consulting company. Esko carries out numerous private client projects, as well as publishing Fastmarkets RISI’s comprehensive studies on tissue business developments and global recycled fiber markets worldwide.

Sampsa Veijalainen leads Fastmarkets RISI’s Asian Mill Intelligence team, which maintains a comprehensive database of the global pulp and paper mills. His area of expertise is mill cost competitiveness analysis, providing clients with detailed mill cash manufacturing costs as well as investment and capital cost estimates. During his eight years with the company, he has specialized in the analysis of graphic papers, paper grade and dissolving pulps, various packaging grades as well as specialty papers. He is the main author of the Release Liner and Label Papers Global Supply Study (2018) and has contributed to various multi-client studies such as Developments in the China Pulp Market (2019), European Containerboard Machine Conversion Study (2017) and Specialty Food Papers (2014), as well as multiple single-client studies. Prior to joining Fastmarkets RISI, he worked in various manufacturing and R&D positions at pulp and paper mills in Europe and Latin America. He holds a Master’s Degree in Pulp and Paper Technology from Aalto University in Finland.
