Fluctuations in packaging material costs continue to challenge procurement and supply chain managers. In April, the focus shifted to wooden pallets, a critical component for logistics, as manufacturers successfully pushed for price increases amid evolving market dynamics.
The cost of logistics and shipping can make or break profitability for food and beverage companies. With pallet prices seeing their largest increase in years, understanding the key drivers behind this volatility is crucial for effective budget planning and supplier negotiations.
US pallet producers’ recent buyer education campaign proved successful with reported US softwood GMA (Grocery Manufacturers Association) pallet pricing up significantly across grades and zones in April.
As reported in last month’s US Pallet Prices commentary, pallet manufacturers made extensive efforts in March to educate buyers on pallet cost inflation. Reported narratives centered primarily on low-grade lumber price icnreases. Throughout April, the messaging appeared to have landed, with reported softwood GMA pricing data indicating significant increases across grades and delivered zones.
Notably, the bulk of the increases appear to have occurred throughout the beginning of April. As the month drew to a close, more macroeconomic uncertainty, freight headwinds and falling southern yellow pine #3 prices in the East all combined to mute additional pallet price movement.
All new, used grade-A and used grade-B softwood GMA pallet markets saw significant assessment increases.
In most instances, the month’s price increases represent the largest assessment increases in terms of both percentages and absolute values since Fastmarkets began assessing pallet markets in August of 2024. The sharp upward movement can be explained by both an uptick in demand as evidenced by freight indicators and, as previously mentioned, low-grade lumber price inflation.
While a flood of anecdotal reports indicated that the freight market has picked up as seasonally expected, truck driver shortages, fuel surcharges, logistical snafus and lagging public freight KPI data obfuscated the situation. Pallet producers have recently reported seasonal upticks, but with a fractured marketplace, many small and mid-size manufacturers have been left wondering whether individual demand increases are isolated instances or reflections of a larger general trend.
This upward trend in pallet pricing highlights the ongoing volatility in the logistics sector. As manufacturers and buyers navigate this uncertainty, access to timely and accurate market data is essential for informed decisions.
