Steelmakers in North America are seeing an increase in market opportunities, from shale gas production to the need for US-based steel plants. But will the industry reap the benefits?

It seems there are two major threats that may derail the industry’s ability to capitalise on these opportunities.

And ahead of the Steel Success Strategies XXIX event, a survey of North American steelmakers highlighted both the opportunities fuelling the steel industry along with the threats that could put the brakes on growth.

The survey, run by Steel First sister publication AMM subsidiary American Metal Market Events, also identified China’s need for imported scrap could have a major impact on US scrap prices, and government legislation must “stop the flow of imported steel”.
