Proposal to amend China Coated Ivory Board price assessment: pricing notice

Fastmarkets is proposing to amend its price assessment for FP-CBB-0028 Coated ivory board (commodity), 250 g, delivered East China, CNY/tonne.

With Fastmarkets’ sister company UM Paper set to discontinue the price assessment for the coated ivory board product produced by Shandong Bohui Paper Industry in response to the changes in the Chinese market, we propose to exclude it from the calculation of the price for the product. The proposed exclusion may affect the price assessment in the first month, but it will make the assessment an improved reflection of the dynamic boxboard market in China going forward.

The specifications of the affected price are as follows:

FP-CBB-0028 Coated ivory board (commodity), 250 g, delivered East China
Quantity: 200 tonnes
Location: East China (including Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Shanghai and Guangdong)
Timing: Orders taken in the month to date for shipment in the current month or the following month.
Unit: CNY/Tonne
Payment terms: Assume normal and customary payment terms. Tax included
Publication: Monthly, in the last week of the month or first week of the following month, 2pm Singapore time
Notes: Domestic grades. Prices reflect sales of the most common brands and do not reflect prices of lower-quality, smaller-volume brands.

This price is part of the Fastmarkets Asia – Packaging Paper and Board package.

The consultation period for this proposed amendment starts from September 13 2024 and will end on October 14 2024. The amendment will then take place, subject to market feedback, on November 1 2024.

My last Viewpoint at the end of February provided some thoughts on the outlook for Asian paper and board markets in 2025, and it highlighted three areas of concern that could hold back growth: the trade war, China's sluggish economy and inflation. Fast forward four months and a lot has happened, especially related to the trade war. In this Viewpoint, I provide my latest thoughts on developments in these three areas and then drill down specifically on the containerboard market and look at what has happened and where things are going.
