As the market focuses on whether Trafigura might put a nominee on Nyrstar’s board, it has emerged this week that former European Commissioner Viviane Reding could also sit on the board.

Base metals traded on the London Metal Exchange are for the most part consolidating after recent weakness, the exceptions are aluminium prices that are up by 0.7% at $2,147 per tonne and lead prices that are down by 0.5% at $2,490 per tonne. The rest are little changed, with copper prices recently quoted at $6,943 per tonne.

Privately-owned commodities trading firm Levmet has opened a new London office to help facilitate its growing trading activities.

Base metals prices were weaker again this morning, Thursday April 20, with three-month prices on the London Metal Exchange down an average of 1% as of 06:38 BST, with zinc and lead prices off the most with losses of 1.6% and 1.5%, respectively, copper prices are off 0.7% at $5,557 per tonne, while aluminium prices are off the least with a 0.2% drop to $1,908.50 per tonne. Prices have since started to rebound.

Base metals prices were higher across the board this morning, Friday October 13, while copper climbed back above $6,900 per tonne due to support from stronger fundamentals.

The EU is becoming overly dependent on metal imports even for basic commodities such as zinc, aluminium and copper, Europe’s non-ferrous metals body, Eurometaux, warned this week.
