The economic and geopolitical clouds are getting more widespread and darker with unrest in Hong Kong and debt default concerns in Argentina adding to market concerns that are already stressed by the continuing US-China trade dispute, poor global economic data, stalemate over Iran and the potential for a hard Brexit.

The markets have been under steady pressure for so long that the combination of good news about Hong Kong, with the withdrawal of the extradition bill, and reports that high level US-China trade talks will resume in October, have been enough to lead a relief rally.

Participants were expecting a stronger performance by the base metals on Tuesday October 8 following the reopening of Chinese markets, but futures prices on both the London Metal Exchange and Shanghai Futures Exchange have been mixed.

Deliverable copper stocks at Shanghai Futures Exchange-approved warehouses increased for an eighth consecutive week in the week ended Friday March 23, while aluminium inventories showed a milder gain.

Base metals prices on the Shanghai Futures Exchange were mixed at the close of the morning trading session on Monday December 30, but movements were largely limited amid the year-end slowdown.
