Ukraine grain exports fall by 19% week on week

Amidst economic shifts, Ukraine's grain export volumes fell by 165,000 tonnes to 682,000 tonnes in the week leading to September 19, according to the State Customs Service's latest data

Ukraine’s grain export volumes fell to 682,000 tonnes in the week to September 19, down by 165,000 tonnes, or 19% from 847,000 tonnes in the preceding seven days, according to data released by the country’s State Customs Service on Friday, September 20.

Total year-to-date grain exports for the current marketing year, which started on July 1, 2024, amount to 9 million tonnes, up by 3.1 million tonnes, or 53%, from the 5.88 million tonnes shipped over the corresponding period in the prior marketing year.

Weekly corn exports fell to 51,000 tonnes, down by 91,000 tonnes, or 64%, from 83,000 tonnes, pushing the marketing year total to 2.5 million tonnes – an increase of 85,000 tonnes, or 3%, year on year from 2.46 million tonnes.

The Netherlands has been the main importer of Ukrainian corn in the month to date, importing 53,887 tonnes, while Turkey imported 52,478 tonnes, Austria 22,738 tonnes, Italy 18,146 tonnes, Lebanon 16,649 tonnes and Germany 15,497 tonnes.

Wheat export trends

Wheat exports decreased by 57,000 tonnes, or 9%, to 589,000 tonnes week on week, with total export volumes for the marketing year amounting to 5.26 million tonnes, up by 2.4 million tonnes, or 86%, from the 2.46 million tonnes shipped over the corresponding period in the preceding marketing year.

Spain has been the main destination for wheat exports in September to date, taking 475,821 tonnes, followed by France with 221,094 tonnes, Egypt with 167,477 tonnes, Bulgaria with 137,771 tonnes, Romania with 104,288 tonnes, Turkey with 64,619 tonnes and the United Arab Emirates with 54,099 tonnes.

Weekly barley exports dropped by 17,000 tonnes, or 29%, to 42,000 tonnes in the reporting week, with total exports in the current season amounting to 1.2 million tonnes, twice as much as 594,000 tonnes in the corresponding period last year.

Saudi Arabia has been the leading destination for Ukrainian barley in September so far, with 41,002 tonnes booked, followed by Austria with 30,428 tonnes, Moldova with 8,745 tonnes and China with 5,643 tonnes.

The data issued by Ukrainian customs authorities shows goods that have been declared for export in a particular timeframe, but the figures do not always correspond with volumes that physically leave the country over that period.
